Staphylococcus Epidermidis, Staphylococcus epidermidis – Wikipedia, Staphylococcus epidermidis | bacterium | Britannica, Staphylococcus epidermidis | bacterium | Britannica, S. epidermidis is a gram-positive bacterium. Its cell wall teichoic acid is formed by polymerized glycerol, glucose, and N-acetyl glucosamine. Cellular characteristics are shown in Figure 3.11 (A) and (B). The GC content of its genomic DNA ranges from 30% to 37%, and the type strain is ATCC14990.
S. epidermidis is a common cause of infections of implanted foreign bodies (intravascular catheters, catheters for continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis [CAPD], Liquorshunts, prostheses, artificial heart valves and joints, pacemakers, etc.).
Staphylococcus epidermidis is the most frequently encountered member of the coagulase-negative staphylococci on human epithelial surfaces. It has emerged as an important nosocomial pathogen, especially in infections of indwelling medical devices.

The bacteriology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, antimicrobial susceptibility, and therapy of Staphylococcus epidermidis infections are reviewed. Staph. epidermidis is often regarded as a culture contaminant, but its importance as a pathogen has been recognized in recent years. Excep.

The epidermis is the outermost of the three layers that make up the skin, the inner layers being the dermis and hypodermis. The epidermis layer provides a barrier to infection from environmental pathogens and regulates the amount of water released from the body into the atmosphere through transepidermal water loss. The epidermis is composed of multiple layers of flattened cells that overlie a …
